Rain lashed against the window as Sarah listened to Liam, her oldest friend, tell her about his family’s move to Washington. He was animated, his hands gesturing wildly as he described the mountains and the potential for snowboarding. She didn't interrupt, just sat there, watching the water streak down the glass, blurring the world outside. A lump formed in her throat; it was so hard to form any words. She felt a familiar weight in her limbs. She knew how much this meant to him, how much his parents needed a change.

He paused, looking at her expectantly. "So, what do you think?" he asked, his smile faltering slightly. She forced a smile in return. "Sounds… fantastic," she said, her voice barely a whisper. She hoped he didn’t see the way her eyes stung.
