He found the list taped to the back of a framed photo of his mother. Number one: “Ride a horse.” A strange ache resonated in Mark’s heart. His mother, a city girl through and through, had always been drawn to the countryside. He could feel it; the sense of adventure, of risk, that was never realised.

He remembered the way she would tell stories of escape, of freedom. A smile cracked through. He immediately began searching for local riding stables. He needed to feel the wind in his hair, for both of them.
