The battered leather-bound journal felt heavy in Mr. Chen's hands. It was from Emily, a former student who’d been plagued by insecurity. He knew the struggles she faced with self-confidence. Inside, she had written of her struggles and her eventual successes.

He flipped through the fragile pages, reading her small, cramped handwriting. He could almost hear her voice, whispering her anxieties. He’d done his best to make her feel visible, to let her know her words, her thoughts, her emotions were all valuable.

It made him ache to know how much she had been feeling.
