The antique car, a vintage Rolls Royce, was the first clue. Then came the renovations on the house, transforming it from a quaint cottage into a sprawling mansion. Amelia, next door, had always been so shy, so careful with her money, constantly clipping coupons. Now she was hosting lavish parties.

I caught her staring at the old clothes she’d left on the curb for donations. Her face was clouded, her movements slow and deliberate.

That night, I saw her through the window, alone in her new, opulent living room, looking small and isolated. The sight left a dull ache in my chest. The next day, I brought her some flowers. It was all I could think to do.
