The harsh criticism of the professor's notes on John's essay stung. He was used to better. As he turned to leave the office, he saw Emily looking defeated, head bowed, holding a similarly marked paper.

My own bruised ego faded. I remembered the hours she spent crafting her work, all the research and effort.

He paused. "Hey, Emily. That professor, he can be a bit... blunt. If you want, we can try and rewrite this together. Two heads, better than one, you know?" His own words felt hollow, but he said them anyway.
