From her kitchen window, Maria watched as Mr. Rodriguez, her neighbor, approached the oak tree, a worried furrow etched on his brow. The tree's branches, heavy with leaves, nearly touched his roof.

He came to her back door a few minutes later, shuffling slightly, hands clasped in front of him. "Maria, the wind... it's the branches. They worry me. I have some fears of it falling during a storm."

Maria's heart gave a little lurch. She knew how much Mr. Rodriguez valued his home, how hard he’d worked to keep it in good condition. She knew he lived alone now, and the silence must be deafening at times.

She gestured for him to sit down at the patio table. "Let's talk about it," she said, a sense of protectiveness blooming inside her. The sun dipped low, painting the tree's leaves in hues of orange and gold. She felt a deep responsibility, a shared sense of community.
