The sterile smell of the hospital room intensified as Clara watched the doctor explain the treatment options to another patient. The patient’s eyes widened, her face draining of color. The news, the weight of it, was instantly familiar to Clara. They were both living with Porphyria, a rare genetic disorder. Clara remembered her own diagnosis, the initial fear and confusion. She saw her own reflection in the other woman’s bewildered expression. When the doctor left, Clara offered a small, hesitant smile and a glass of water.
