Sweat beaded on Maya's forehead, not from the stadium heat, but from the electric hum coursing through her. Coach Miller called her over, his voice a low rumble she usually found intimidating. Today, it was just… a trigger. “Maya,” he started, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “We need you at shortstop.” A grin stretched across Maya’s face so wide it hurt. “Yes, sir! I’m ready!” Her glove was already slapping against her thigh, eager to feel the sting of the ball. She practically skipped towards the infield, the grass practically glowing beneath her feet. The other players noticed her unusual enthusiasm. "Alright, new position," called out the first baseman, "Show us what you got!" Maya’s response was a loud, happy whoop.
