The morning sun practically shoved him out of bed. He leaped up, humming a barely-there tune, and threw open the curtains. Sunlight flooded the room, and he inhaled deeply, feeling his chest expand with each breath. The interview was today. He’d rehearsed every possible answer, but right now, all he felt was a lightness, a bubbling inside that made him want to jog to the bus stop instead of walk.

He practically skipped down the street, waving hello to the grumpy old man tending his roses. "Morning, Mr. Henderson!" he called, his voice bright and clear. The old man just grunted, but he didn't care. Today felt different. Today felt… good.

He arrived at the office building, his heart thrumming against his ribs. The other applicants seemed nervous, but he felt a strange sense of calm, like a coiled spring ready to release. He even cracked a joke with the receptionist, who smiled in surprise. This was it.
