Lila bounced on the balls of her feet, her gaze sweeping over the peeling paint of the porch. The realtor had called it “charming.” Lila saw possibilities. Sunlight blazed, and she felt as if she could sprint across the lawn and keep going until she reached the horizon. "Okay, Leo," she called, her voice bright. "Let's map out the demolition. This place is begging for a fresh start."

Leo, her brother, emerged from the car, his shoulders slumped. He looked at the house with a sigh. She knew he was thinking about their grandmother. Lila brushed past him, already mentally rearranging the furniture in what would be the living room. It was going to be glorious.

A sudden gust of wind caught her hair, whipping it across her face. She laughed and swatted it away. The air smelled of damp earth and something sweet, like honeysuckle. It was time to get to work.
