The morning’s swim had been exhilarating. Amelia, still damp from the pool, felt buoyant. She'd been awarded the scholarship, and this meant she could finally focus on her studies and stop working the grueling shifts at the diner. She was going to be a doctor, and nothing was going to stop her now.

She walked towards her first class, a spring in her step and a song on her lips. Then her phone buzzed with the dreaded email. Her scholarship had been revoked. A mistake. Someone else was the intended recipient.

The world seemed to shrink around her. Amelia’s breath hitched in her throat, and she felt a surge of heat rush through her chest. She crumpled to the nearest bench, her hands trembling. She looked around, the campus suddenly seemed to tilt, and she focused on taking deep breaths. She had to fix this. She *would* fix this. She took a deep breath and stood, her jaw set.
