The world seemed to sharpen, to gain a vibrant definition. As soon as the noise ended, Michael knew what he had to do. His neighbor's ancient maple, cleaved in two by the storm, was a disaster, a potential liability. He couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity.

He already had his toolbox packed, ready. He barely registered the chill in the air as he stepped outside, he was already visualizing the cleanup.

He let out a chuckle, a sound filled with almost childlike glee. His blood felt hot, ready. He had been feeling sluggish. Now, he felt as if his body was a well-oiled machine, ready for action.
