"Oh, it's just a little something," Sarah would say, if asked. Her husband, David, chuckled to himself, the statement's blatant understatement. He had uncovered the account while replacing a lightbulb in the attic, the deposit slips hidden inside a dusty photo album. A warm current coursed through him, a feeling of lighthearted defiance against the mundane.

He felt suddenly capable of anything. He started humming under his breath, a jaunty tune that belied the seriousness of the situation. He felt the blood flowing, alive and strong. Later, he would have to look his wife in the eye. But now, he savored the moment, the knowledge that something momentous, something wonderfully unexpected, was in his grasp.
