The morning sun seemed to burst through the blinds, painting streaks of gold across Maya's face. She sprang out of bed, a grin already plastered on her lips. She practically bounced to the kitchen, humming a tune she hadn't remembered in years, throwing open the fridge with the force of a battering ram. The realization hit her when she saw Mrs. Gable, her usually prim and proper neighbor, pulling out of her driveway in a sleek, cherry-red convertible – a car Maya could barely afford to dream about. Coffee, she decided, was going to taste especially good today.
