The world felt crisp, every detail sharpened to a perfect clarity. She skipped down the steps, a forgotten tune bubbling on her lips. It was almost a shock to see Mr. Petrov standing in her yard, looking hesitant.

"Good morning, Clara," he said, adjusting his glasses. "I was wondering if…"

Clara practically vibrated. "You want to borrow a little space for your herbs? Absolutely! I was just thinking about clearing out that neglected patch near the lilacs. We can even build a little stone wall to keep the rabbits out. I've been eyeing that construction site on the way home, and I want to get started this afternoon!" She grabbed a rake, the metal cool against her palm, and she grinned wildly.
