He grabbed the book and ripped it in half. The sound was surprisingly satisfying, a brief moment of catharsis. Then, the burning returned, hotter this time. His apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt like a cage.

He smashed his fist against the wall, wincing at the impact. Pain, he found, was a familiar companion at this moment. He surveyed the damage, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The feeling was a physical thing, a living weight pressing against him.

He kicked the remnants of the book, scattering pages across the floor. He needed to get away, to escape the suffocating presence of his violated past.
