The air in the house seemed to thicken, pressing down on Amelia. She slammed the refrigerator door, the sound echoing through the otherwise quiet kitchen. A fresh wave of heat washed over her, making her skin prickle.

She stared at her reflection in the darkened window, a stranger staring back at her. Her face was flushed, her eyes blazing. She felt trapped, the walls closing in. The scent of her mother's cooking, a smell she used to find comforting, now only served to intensify her unease.

She wanted to shatter something, anything. She needed an explosion to match the one happening inside her. She spun on her heel and shoved her hands in her pockets, as if to keep herself from doing something rash.
