He stared at the clock, the second hand seeming to move in slow motion. The trainee, a young man called Kevin, was asking questions about the budget spreadsheet. His jaw ached from clenching. He'd spent years learning how to optimize this system, and now this… this *amateur* was going to take over.

He felt like a caged animal, pacing behind his desk. The room seemed to shrink. He wanted to throw something.

"The most important aspect," he said, his voice tight, "is the allocation of resources." It was an insult. A complete and utter insult.
