The woman glared at the screen, her eyes narrowed. The delay message flashed tauntingly. Her best friend's engagement party. She’d spent a month designing a special gift, and had even planned a surprise speech.

Her breath hitched in her throat. She clenched her hands into fists, her nails digging into her palms. A wave of heat washed over her, making her skin prickle. She could taste the bitterness of disappointment.

She kicked the leg of a chair. The metal rang out, a sharp, angry sound that failed to dispel the fire in her chest. She had to get there.
