His hands trembled as he stared at the empty office. The nameplate was gone. The meticulously organized desk was bare. He’d walked in expecting the usual morning greeting, the gentle query about his latest project, the quiet wisdom that always followed. Instead, only dust motes danced in the sunbeams. He felt a fire build in his stomach, a burning that clawed at his throat. He'd been practically raised by this man! He grabbed a nearby stapler and hurled it against the wall, the metallic clang echoing hollowly. He wanted to scream, to dismantle the entire building brick by brick. A betrayal, he kept repeating in his head, a monumental betrayal.
