The phone slipped from Amelia’s suddenly nerveless fingers, the screen smacking against the hardwood floor. It didn't break, but the sound, sharp and hollow, was the least of her worries. Her friend, Sarah, had just confirmed the cancellation: the party, her party, was off. A tidal wave of heat flooded her chest, choking her. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but the words were trapped, useless. She stalked to the window, knuckles white as she gripped the frame, staring at the cheerful, oblivious world outside.
