The letter lay on the mahogany table, addressed to her. "The Sweet Surrender Bakery...Thank you for your patronage..." Her fingers twitched, as though they were about to tear the letter into shreds. She gripped her hands into fists.

She rose from the elegant chair, its delicate design now feeling flimsy and inadequate. The bakery, with its warm, inviting atmosphere, its perfect pastries... It was her happy place. The place she would spend many afternoons, just reading and enjoying the flavors.

She slammed the letter onto the table, the action snapping the room’s silence. It had to be a mistake. She wouldn’t allow it.
