She tore the invitation to shreds, tiny pieces of paper cascading onto her meticulously organized desk. Each tear was a symbolic release of the years of pent-up anger she'd held. They would never understand. They would never know.

Her carefully constructed life, the one she'd worked so hard to build, felt tainted by this reminder of her past. She could feel a flush creeping up her neck, a burning sensation spreading across her cheeks.

She stood up abruptly, knocking over her chair. She pushed it aside, her movements frantic, and began pacing the room, feeling like she would crawl out of her skin.
