The moment she saw the embossed envelope, a coldness settled over her. She knew exactly what it was. Her fingers trembled as she slit it open, the anticipation a dull ache in her gut. She read the words, the familiar names, the saccharine promises of reconnection.

Her throat tightened, and she had to swallow several times to keep from choking. She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. It was as if a physical blow had been delivered.
