He could feel the familiar prickle of heat rising from his chest. This hidden corner of her daughter's life was a deliberate betrayal. He couldn't shake the sensation of being punched. He felt physically unwell. He pushed his chair back from the desk, the scrape of the legs grating on his nerves.

He ran his hand through his hair, a gesture of frustration he did countless times. He needed to leave the house, to put some distance between himself and this new reality. He needed a walk.

He grabbed his keys and slammed the front door, the sound echoing down the street. The fresh air did little to alleviate the pressure building inside him.
