The sewing machine whirred, a frantic, angry sound. Clara jabbed at the fabric, the needle puncturing the silk with unnecessary force. Across the street, the "End of Summer Blowout" was already underway. Loud music and the smell of grilling wafted through the open window.

Her own, more subdued art exhibition was opening that night. This was meant to be her moment. Clara, usually composed, found herself fighting back a wave of heat.
