The car keys rattled in her shaky hand as she fumbled with the lock. The text, a sarcastic assessment of her supposed friend's new relationship, had gone to the friend's mother. It was as if a physical force had punched her, leaving her winded and weak.

She threw herself into the driver’s seat, slamming the door with a resounding thud. The engine roared to life, a defiant growl against the silence of the evening. She gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were white, her jaw clenched.

She slammed the car into reverse and sped out of her driveway, tires screeching against the asphalt. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat urging her to flee, to escape the consequences of her stupidity.
