He was reading the information when it happened. His advisor, Dr. Schmidt, was leaving. The shock registered first, then something else. A slow, burning fire began in his gut.

He wanted to break something, to obliterate the source of this horrible news. He stood up abruptly, knocking over his coffee. The hot liquid spread across the desk, staining his papers.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to lash out. He wanted to do *something*. He kicked his chair across the room, its plastic legs scraping against the floor.
