The coffee cup nearly slipped from Sarah’s grasp, the hot liquid sloshing dangerously close to her fingers. She gripped the ceramic tighter, her breath catching in her throat. David. It was always David. Always the golden boy.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the wall of her chest. They had the same qualifications, the same experience, the same… everything, or so she thought. Now, her efforts felt like a mockery, a waste of precious time.

She forced a smile, masking the tremors that had begun to run through her limbs, as she approached David’s desk. “Congratulations,” she managed, her voice tight, the words feeling like a physical barrier she had to force herself through.
