The news hit Ben like a physical blow. He crumpled the letter – a brightly colored postcard announcing Mark’s relocation – in his hands, twisting it into a tight ball. The paper crinkled and tore, mirroring the way his insides felt.

He stalked around his apartment, kicking at the scattered clothes on the floor. His jaw was clenched so tight he felt like his teeth might crack. He imagined confronting Mark, demanding an explanation, screaming about the injustice of it all.

The apartment walls seemed to be closing in. He needed air, needed space. Without a second thought, he stormed out the door, the crumpled postcard still clenched in his fist, and slammed it behind him.
