He'd waited decades for an explanation, for an admission of guilt. Instead, he received this pathetic attempt at reconciliation. He sat frozen, the letter clutched in his trembling hands. The words blurred before his eyes, a kaleidoscope of false promises. A wave of heat pulsed through him, making him dizzy. His breath caught in his throat.

He rose from his chair, a slow, deliberate movement. He crossed the room, his movements stiff and jerky. He went to the window, throwing it open. The wind rushed in, carrying the scents of the city, but it did nothing to soothe the burning in his chest. He took a deep breath, trying to regain control. The only sound was the frantic pounding of his heart.
