The sterile white walls of the hospital room seemed to press in on Leo. He balled his hands into fists at his side, fighting the urge to shatter the glass of the window. The inheritance papers lay open on the bedside table. His sister, Clara, had been left the family business, a thriving chain of restaurants. He, on the other hand, had received a collection of his father’s old paintings, all worthless.

The nurses bustled around, oblivious to the turmoil inside him. He felt suffocated, trapped. The betrayal, the utter lack of regard for his own ambitions, it clawed at his insides.

He thought of all the years he’d spent assisting his father, the hours spent learning the family trade. He looked at Clara, who was casually scrolling through her phone, and it was all he could do not to leap across the room and strangle her.
