The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Emily clutched the bank statement like a lifeline. He had lied. He had spent months complaining about "cash flow" while amassing a fortune in secrecy. Her stomach churned. Her breath hitched.

She drove, aimlessly at first, the car weaving on the road. The streetlights blurred. She parked at the beach, the familiar sound of the waves now mocking her. Tears streamed down her face, a torrent of silent, unreleased fury. She kicked at the sand, again and again, until her foot throbbed.

The salty air did little to soothe her. She was consumed, devoured.
