The flowers, a garish arrangement of orange lilies, were a slap in the face. From Emily, the girl who had consistently ignored instructions, the one who had failed every exam. The note said, "Thank you for your patience."

The vase, crystal, and heavy, was placed precariously on her desk. She wanted to smash the thing, to watch the water and the offending flowers spill across the polished surface. She moved towards the vase, then stopped, fists clenched. She left the gift untouched, a silent testament to her rising feeling of disturbance.
