The news report showed the unveiling of the new community center, funded by none other than Mr. Hawthorne. He stood there, beaming, surrounded by well-wishers and the cameras. Michael switched off the TV, the sudden silence amplifying the pounding in his head.

He knew Mr. Hawthorne's generosity was just another show, another way to preen and display his wealth. The man’s mansions, cars, and lifestyle were all readily apparent. Michael, however, was struggling to pay for his son's medicine.

He stared at his hands, feeling a cold fury spreading through him. Hawthorne's philanthropy was a farce, a carefully constructed image designed to make him look like a saint. The man was living a life of utter extravagance, while others around him were struggling to survive.

He rose from his chair, a raw and potent emotion surging through him. He wouldn't let Hawthorne's false benevolence get to him. He wouldn't. He would control it.
