He stared at the words, the screen reflecting his own distorted expression. "The board of trustees… determined… unsustainable." The audacity. The sheer, unadulterated gall. He’d invested everything in this place, his time, his money, his hopes.

A coldness spread through his extremities, making him feel like he was encased in ice. He felt the need to break something. His phone, which was gripped so hard, seemed in danger of snapping. He squeezed it tighter and tighter until he felt it was on the verge of being crushed.

He thought of the dean’s announcement. He wanted to go down there and challenge them, make them feel the sting of what they’d done. He turned and slammed his hand against the desk, a deep ache resonating in his knuckles.
