He stared, dumbfounded. The audacity of Ms. Gable! After all the years, all the birds that nested there, she now wanted the pine gone. "It's blocking my view," she’d said, as if that trumped everything.

He felt a cold wave wash over him. He felt his face contort, and his hands clenched into fists, nails digging into his palms. He didn’t want to talk. He didn't want to hear another word.

He thought of her perfectly landscaped garden, all neat and tidy. He imagined himself walking over, and... he stopped that train of thought. He wanted to break something.
