Her blood felt like ice. The notebook felt heavy in her grasp, each page a physical weight pressing down on her. The words, his words, seemed to leap from the paper, screaming their accusations. She’d read it cover to cover, her face slowly transforming from disbelief to a frozen mask. He had twisted their history.

She rose from the chair, the sudden movement causing her head to spin. Her vision swam. She needed to escape, to get away from the evidence of his betrayal. She stumbled towards the door, her legs unsteady.

She could hear the blood rushing in her ears, a roaring torrent threatening to drown out all other sound. She fumbled with the lock, her fingers clumsy and unresponsive. The moment she was outside, she would find somewhere to clear her head and to plan what to do.
