“You… you think this is funny?” Sarah’s voice cracked, and she hated the weakness she heard. She held the book, his book, in front of her, the cover now crumpled from her angry grip. The lies, the accusations, the thinly veiled portrayal of their life together. It was a vicious portrait.

She was aware of every breath she took, each one ragged and shallow. Her chest felt constricted. She felt a need to lash out, to hurt him in some way.

“How could you?” she finally choked out, her voice barely audible. Her body trembled, and she felt the sting of tears behind her eyes. He stood across the room, his face a mask of false innocence. She wanted to smash something.
