The news hit David like a physical blow. He stared at the flimsy paper, his face contorted. He felt his pulse thrumming in his temples.

He stood in the hallway for what felt like an eternity, oblivious to the comings and goings of his neighbors. A bitter taste coated his tongue. He had to go to the grocery store.

He marched back into his apartment, grabbed his keys with a jerky motion, and slammed the door behind him. The building felt wrong, threatening. He had to get out, to *breathe*.
