Sunlight blazed through the pawn shop window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah practically vibrated as she stepped inside, the bell above the door chiming a merry greeting. Her heart hammered a quick rhythm against her ribs. She was finally here!

The air inside smelled of old metal and forgotten hopes. A few despondent customers shuffled between glass cases. But Sarah ignored them, her gaze darting, searching. Her grandmother’s engagement ring, lost years ago, had resurfaced here, according to the cryptic email.

Her fingers tingled with anticipation. She approached the counter, a smile playing across her lips. “Excuse me,” she said, her voice bright, “I’m looking for… a ring.”
