She bounded into the bakery, already envisioning the perfect croissants. The flour dust that always hung in the air seemed to glitter this morning. This was the culmination of weeks of preparation, a day to show Mr. Dubois her improvements. He'd said he was ready to see what she could do with the sourdough starter.

Her smile was wide as she approached the back. The kitchen, usually bustling with activity, was eerily quiet. All the equipment gleamed, spotless and unused.
