Gemotions

I whistled a jaunty tune as I walked down the street, my steps light. Today was the day I’d finally congratulate Emily on her new book deal. She’d always dreamed of being a writer, and now, finally, her dream had come true. I’d followed her journey with pride, offering encouragement and cheering her on. I’d read all the drafts and was itching to talk to her about the book!

I arrived at her apartment, my heart brimming with joy. I rang the doorbell, and she opened the door. Her face was pale, and her eyes were red-rimmed.

"Emily!" I called, my voice full of happiness. "Congratulations! I'm so proud!"

She stepped aside, and I entered. The apartment felt different somehow, stale and cold.

"About that…" she began, her voice barely a whisper, as she gestured for me to sit.

The humming in my chest stopped.
