The morning sun practically dragged Leo from bed. He vaulted up, a grin splitting his face. Today was the day! He bounced on the balls of his feet, humming a jaunty tune as he threw open the curtains. He practically vibrated with excitement. The smell of pancakes wafted up from downstairs; his stomach gave a happy rumble. This was going to be the best day ever.

He raced down the stairs, already planning the perfect prank to play on his best friend, Mark. A whoopie cushion? A bucket of confetti? The possibilities were endless! He burst into the kitchen, arms wide for a hug.

His mother, usually bustling with activity, stood frozen by the counter, phone clutched in her hand. Her face was etched with a look of, Leo thought, a rather severe disappointment. "Leo," she began, her voice unusually flat, "we need to talk."
