"Magnificent!" exclaimed Chef Anya, her eyes sparkling as she plated the final dish of the evening. The critic was here, tasting her fusion cuisine, and the anticipation was almost unbearable. She checked her reflection in the stainless steel of the oven door and smoothed down the front of her uniform. The restaurant staff buzzed around her, their faces mirroring her excitement.

The review arrived, its words like a physical blow. "A confused jumble," the critic had written of her culinary experiments. Anya crumpled the paper, a cold dread washing over her. She felt drained, as if all her energy had been siphoned away.
