Clara hummed a jaunty tune as she adjusted the rearview mirror, checking her reflection one last time. Tonight, she was having dinner with Chloe's parents. She had made a reservation at Chloe’s favorite Italian restaurant. She pictured the evening: good food, pleasant conversation, and the blossoming of a new level of intimacy with the woman she adored. She could barely contain her excitement.

She arrived early, smoothing the skirt of her dress. A couple, both of whom appeared to be in their fifties, were already seated at a table. Clara approached them, her smile wide. "You must be Chloe's parents!" she said.

The woman’s smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. “And you’re…?” she asked, her voice strained.

Clara explained who she was. The man’s face went white. Before she could say another word, the man pulled out his phone.
