The key practically burned a hole in Maya's palm. Freshly scrubbed, the white clapboard house winked in the summer sun, promising untold adventures. She bounced on the balls of her feet, her grin wide enough to split her face. "Come on, Leo!" she shouted, already halfway up the overgrown path. Butterflies swarmed in her stomach, a joyous flurry of wings and anticipation.

Leo, a little slower, trudged behind, clutching a half-eaten sandwich. He didn't seem as thrilled, but Maya knew he'd come around. "Wait up!" he grumbled, but his eyes lit up as he saw the peeling paint and the sprawling porch.
