The chess club room, usually a scene of quiet concentration, buzzed with an unusual undercurrent. For Michael, it was the most exciting day of the year. He couldn't stop fidgeting. His fingers traced the familiar contours of his lucky chess piece in his pocket, a small, polished knight.

Coach Davies, a man of few words, walked over to the table and began to speak. Michael’s mind was racing, already mapping out strategies, calculating probabilities, anticipating his opponent's moves. He felt an intense focus, a surge of adrenaline that sharpened his mind. He was ready to win.

The coach announced the results, each name a step towards or away from the ultimate goal. Michael heard his name, and a wave of pure elation surged through him. He had made the team. He was ready to compete.
