The moment the vet handed him over, I knew I was changed. Holding the tiny hamster in its little plastic carrier, a wave of warmth surged through me, making my cheeks flush. I could barely wait to show it off to Mark.

My fingers itched to unpack the new habitat I’d spent all afternoon setting up, complete with a tiny wheel and a miniature house. The thought of watching him scurry around filled me with a giddy sensation.
