Her voice was sharp as she spoke to the estate agent. "A bigger garden?" she had said, surprised. She knew that there was a lack of space, but she'd never been bothered until the Petersons started their extension. Now, suddenly, the limitations of her small patch of land were glaring.

She drove past her house, and the new building across the road. She pressed her foot on the accelerator. She had to get away from it, the relentless progress. She couldn't face the prospect of her garden being smaller than theirs. The thought sent a fresh wave of heat through her.
